### Linux, Windows & Mac
Downloads for most computer operating systems can be found on the [Jellyfin GitHub](https://github.com/jellyfin/jellyfin-media-player/releases)
The desktop computer application will always be able to play any video file because it can use all of the computers capability natively.

### Android
Install via [F-Droid](https://f-droid.org/en/packages/org.jellyfin.mobile/) **prefered** or the [Google Play Store](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.jellyfin.mobile)
The Android app will be able to directly play most media in Jellyfin except for the H.265(mostly 4k content) which will need server transcoding which is currently slow until I get hardware accelleration working.

### iPhone
[App Store](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/jellyfin-mobile/id1480192618?mt=8)
Apple devices are unable to play the file format I am primarily useing(AV1) and also might not work with H.265 content(mostly the 4k stuff). This will mean much of the media library will need server transcoding which is currently slow until I get hardware accelleration working.

### Browsers
You can watch Jellyfin in any browser but compatability with the various media file formats verries so some videos will not play in whichever browser you are using.

#### Firefox
Firefox and the many dirivitives of it are the browser I recommend that most folks use however for Jellyfin it will likely not be able to play the H.265 content(mostly the 4k stuff) which will need server transcoding which is currently slow until I get hardware accelleration working.

#### Chromium/Google Chrome
Google Chrome or the open source de-Googlified versions of Chrome like Chromium will probably be the most likely to play a file especially if runing on a modern machine with build in H.265 hardware decoders.

## Jellyfin Layout and Navigation
### Home Page
On your home page you will see that the media is organized into a few categories including Movies, Shows, Music Videos, and Collections(when multiple movies are part of a series). Each of those categories will have sections featuring recently added content. There are also sections that will allow you to "Continue Watching" a partially completed video and a section "Next Up" to easily continue watching the next episode in a Show.

### Top Menu
Along the top there is a menu under the hamburger lines in the top left and in some windows a back and home button. Some quick links can be found in the top right to join a group watch, cast to a different device, search, edit your profile. Along the center of the header there are different views of the current page like to see your "Favorites" which is Jellyfin's version of a watch list. There will also sometimes be links in this area to sort the category by genre or give suggestions based on what you have previously watched.

### Browsing
Navegation should be pretty familiar compared to other streaming platforms with some quick options apearing when you hover over the video poster like a play button and a heart to favorite a video or check mark to record it as already watched. Clicking on the poster will take you to the detail page for that movie, show, season, or episode. Here you can read about the video and on teh right side can take those same quick actions but also often watch a trailer provided locally or streamed within the app and sourced from YouTube. You can also see and sometimes select the video format, audio, and subtitles. The default are usually good but sometimes by default the subtitles will be on or the audio track will be a different language. You can also change the audio and subtitles in the video player.

### Video Player
Normal navigation buttons will appear when you interact with the screen including a "CC" in the lower right if there are subtitle options and a "musical note" if there are multiple audio tracks to choose from. In the settings gear you can change a few things but most importantly you can change the Quality setting which is usually best set at maximum so that you can directly play the file without slow server transcoding but this is also where you can choose a lower quality to work with a slow internet connection. "Playback Info" will show a bunch of info about how the video is being streamed to you and can help in determining if the video is being transcoded and why.

::: info
The Quality usually defaults to "auto" which will frequently result in the video transcoding when it doesn't necessarily need to. Change these default in the Playback settings.
:::

### Settings
- You can change your password or add a profile image.
- You can change display settings like light/dark mode and how many posters to show on a page(0 for unlimited scrolling). These settings are specific to the app you are using and so will have to be adjusted for each one you use.
- You can customize your Home page changing the order and sections that are shown.
- Playback default settings can be selected based on your preferences, like if you want the next episode to start playing automatically. I recommend changing the video quality settings to "4K - 120 mbps" and "screen Resolution" for best viewing experience.
- You can also change the look that text based subtitles will use for best readability but this won't effect many subtitles which are image based.
